We planned a week end in South-Tyrol (or Alto Adige, as we told you in this post) under the guise of skiing, just to have a dinner here… Nothing else needs to be said, Schöneck is our favourite restaurant and as usual we spent a couple of hours of total relax in a lovely place, eating superbly.
We went for dinner
last February 10th and the spectacular enlightened house as usual welcomed us, with a total darkness all around.

Once inside, you feel totally dipped in a warm and relaxing room, with a sense of well-being, especially if the outside temperature is -15°…
The restaurant counts: the piano bar, 3 historic South Tyrolean rustic dining rooms, the sun drenched conservatory furnished in turn of the century Tyrolean style and, in the summer, the terrace.

The three rustic dining rooms of this gourmet restaurant radiate historic charm. Each of the rooms contains a characteristic majolica oven which provides a cosy heat in winter: the “Engelstube”, the “Gotische Stube” and the “Zirmstube” are snug, comfortable and inviting. Generally, these “Stuben” are dedicated to couples or at least 4/5 persons, so you can spend a romantic dinner in a small and intimate setting.
The cuisine, lead-by Chef Karl Baumgartner, is a perfect balance between tradition and innovation and almost all the ingredients are sourced from local producers.

Mari and Siegi Baumgartner (Karl’s wife and brother) lead the service team and Siegi will be happy to suggest you the right wine. In our last dinner for example, he gave us a precious suggestion (I want to thank him once more) and let us know an orange wine from Piemonte, from the indigenous grape “Cortese”, produced by a small but fantastic biodynamic cellar: Cascina degli Ulivi.

Cascina degli Ulivi Cortese Montemarino
He opened a bottle of “Montemarino” year 2008 and it was still young and well-balanced, it’s already in my agenda for the next order, some on-line wine shops in Italy that deliver also abroad have it on their list.
Basically, if you’re searching for other good reasons for going to Schoeneck, here is another 5:

  • It’s located in Puster Valley, close to Brunico in a spectacular location in Dolomiti. The best for having a holiday here, in winter (there are many ski areas, the most famous and closer is Kronplatz) but also in summer for hiking.
  • First of all your sight will be delighted, look at photos…
  • All the ambience is gorgeous, but the 3 Stuben are something special.
  • It’s a Michelin-rated restaurant since 1996, but you feel comfortable also dressing casual.
  • If you also like fish, I ate here fish better than in many famous sea-view restaurants!

I can only suggest you to spend one week in Puster Valley, just eating in Schoeneck will justify your holiday!
