GUMPHOF PINOT NOIR PRAESULIS 2014

During a cold winter dinner at “Da Aurelio” restaurant, on the top of Passo Giau, we were checking the wine list searching for a Pinot Noir from Alto Adige (South Tyrol). At the end, we chose a bottle from a famous cellar, but Annalisa took it off from the Sommelier hands and said us:
“if you like, you could taste a really special Pinot Noir from the same area…”. She opened a bottle with a beautiful label and thanks to her that evening we had a big surprise from a small cellar able to make great wines: Gumphof.
Markus Prackwieser took the lead from his father around 20 years ago, bringing his true passion for wine, youthful energy and his special feeling with French wines, especially from Bourgogne and Loire Valley.
Gumphof is located in the far North Italy, close to Austria borders, in Isarco Valley and all the vineyards are located between 400 and 550 meters.
Here we have large differences in temperature between the day and the night, thanks to the different winds that blow in that area: around 11 am gets the famous “Ora” wind from Garda lake, which bring a mild climate but gives way to cold winds from the mountains during the nights. These weather conditions are really important in order to produce good quality wines and to increase their aromas.
The most prestigious selection from this cellar is the Praesulis line with most complex wines which includes: Pinot Blanc; Pinot Noir; Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer.
We tasted all these wines, but we would suggest you especially the Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, we had great emotions from them!
Gumphof is a small cellar and it isn’t easy to find some bottles, anyway some on-line Italian wine shops always have some bottles available and they delivery in all Europe.
Why we suggest you to buy some bottles?
- Alto Adige wines are among the best produced in Italy, and especially in the last years the quality has grown considerably.
- It’s a small cellar but you would drink something special, not properly famous like other cellars in Alto Adige but better than the most of them.
- Extremely satisfactory quality-price index.
- These wines reflect Markus Prackwieser’s character, but are very typical as well
Here below our tasting:
PINOT NOIR PRAESULIS 2014
The wine is clear, deep brilliant, ruby red with a garnet nuance.
Great intensity, generous alcohol, medium but silky tannins, refreshing acidity and very good balanced.
On the nose: spices, small red and black berries, slightly earthy, hints of vanilla. Powerful flavour intensity and very long finish.
Food pairing: we tasted it with a grilled fillet with porcini mushrooms. Perfect!
