CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE – CHÂTEAU LA NERTHE

ENGLISH VERSION AND PHOTOS BELOW!

ENGLISH VERSION

11 August, on a beautiful sunny and windy day, we had the opportunity to visit the Château la Nerthe estate and winery and taste their stunning wines.
But let’s begin with a small mention on the territory of Châteauneuf-du-Pape:
at the time the summer residence of the Avignon popes, this area is part of the Rhone valley, where red wines predominate. In Châteauneuf are allowed 13 types of grapes, but the most used are: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Carignan.
The typical soil of this appellation consists of round and smooth stones, which catch the sun during the day and release the heat at night. Every day the mistral blows here, and sweeps away the clouds and the humidity that is very harmful to the viticulture.

As we said, we enter this beautiful estate: Château la Nerthe.

La Nerthe was the place where the 13 grape varieties of this appellation were first planted after the phylloxera disaster. Here we find the oldest vineyard of the appellation.
The vineyard is composed with the same grape varieties that Joseph Ducos, its owner, defined at the end of the 19Thcentury. Three grape varieties dominate: Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.
The estate is conducted in organic crop since 1998.
The cellars are from the 16th and 18th centuries.

They work with gravity without using pumps to decant and move the wine: On the first level of the cellar we find a stainless steel barrel where the freshly pressed juice begins to ferment.
On the second level a stone barrel where the wine falls by gravity and then transferred to the barriques. The same stone barrel will be used to store the wine before being bottled.

Their wines use barriques or large barrels depending on the grape variety.
At the end of the visit to the winery we tasted 4 fantastic wines including a Château la Nerthe of 2007 Private reserve, a 11 year old wine! Now it’s the right age to drink it.
Infinite aromas on the nose and flavours on the mouth ( dried fruit, gudron, ethereal, figs, stone fruit, jam), round but still present tannins, infinite and complex final.

Sommelier by passion not by profession. In fact, in my working life I am an office mouse always submerged by payment deadlines and budgets. I love animals and especially dogs. it will perhaps be due to this special feeling that I learned from them to smell all the perfumes and smells that surround me. Since I was a child I enjoyed discovering with my mother all the ingredients she used in her delicious dishes by simply smelling them. For this I was called “truffle dog”. I do not have much visual memory so I use my nose to remember, to memorize and store all the wines I taste. I like to travel in the wine-areas of the world to discover traditions, famous or small unknown producers and share these emotions with my friends. I'll take you around with me.
